 Village Voices

Picture
Welcome to our blog series Village Voices!
In this space, we aim to encapsulate the diverse experiences of the Black diaspora, focusing on holistic wellness. Our goal is to foster community voices by emphasizing the significance of nurturing the mind, body, and spirit. Offering wellness tips, sharing personal anecdotes from the community, and cultivating connections within our village will be central to our exploration.

Peace and blessing village! Winter brings a natural shift in energy, the dominant doshic energy of Kapha and Vata (water, earth, air and ether universal elements). Therefore, it is a time to embrace creativity and grounding, while managing sluggishness and anxiety.
Ayurveda encourages us to align with the seasons, and winter is a time to balance Kapha’s heaviness and Vata’s restlessness.

Understanding the Kapha and Vata Dosha energies of Winter Kapha (water and earth element) is grounded and steady, but in excess, it can lead to lethargy or depression. Vata, made of air and ether, is creative but can cause anxiety when out of balance. Winter combines both energies, and we can observe their effects in our physical and mental well-being.

General Ayurvedic Tips for Winter
  • Eat warm, spiced meals. Focus on soups, stews, and cooked vegetables with warming spices like ginger and cinnamon.
  • Drink warm beverages. Choose chai, herbal teas, or warm water with lemon to soothe digestion and keep you grounded.
  • Exercise regularly. Keep your energy flowing with activities like yoga, walking, or dance.

Tips for Balancing Pitta in Winter
Though Pitta is less active in winter, those with a Pitta constitution can stay balanced by:
  • Eating grounding foods like sweet potatoes and legumes (lentils and beans).
  • Moderating spicy foods to avoid overheating.
  • Sticking to a steady routine and engaging in moderate exercise; yin yoga.
Tips for Balancing Vata in Winter
To calm Vata's restlessness:
  • Enjoy sweet and salty foods to soothe anxiety.
  • Drink warm beverages like chai to calm the nervous system.
  • Practice restorative yoga and avoid over-scheduling to maintain grounding.
Tips for Balancing Kapha in Winter
For those with Kapha tendencies, winter can feel heavy. Keep your energy light by:
  • Changing your routine to avoid stagnation.
  • Joining hot yoga classes or doing invigorating exercise.
  • Eating light, spiced foods instead of heavy, fatty options.
Winter is a time for reflection, but it can also bring challenges. By embracing Ayurvedic practices and balancing Kapha and Vata energies, you can navigate the season with greater ease and harmony. Remember to eat warming foods, stay active, and honor your body’s natural rhythms to find peace and vitality throughout the winter months.

You Are Beautiful, Enlightened, and Forever Empowered!

As I started my day today, I felt a deep urge to remind you of something incredibly important: You are worthy. Worthy of rest. Worthy of care. Worthy of space to just be. In a world that often seems to be drowning in negativity, it’s so easy to forget that self-love, joy, healing, and abundance are not just things to aspire to—they are our birthright. And today, I want to remind you to own that truth.

We, as women of color, have often been told to shrink, to quiet ourselves, to play small. We’ve been handed limitations and expected to carry them as truths. But we are reclaiming our power. We have the ability to create the lives we deserve. We have the ability to create our own realities, free of the restrictions others try to impose on us.

This is why Aishia and I are so committed to the work we began five years ago. Our mission is clear: to create a community where Black women are both healers and the healed, supported by one another and thriving alongside our families. Every day, we take steps toward a future where we are free to fully embrace our strength, our joy, and our worth.
This is where you come in.
I want to invite you to join me for a special virtual experience designed to help you reconnect with yourself and nurture your well-being. On Monday, November 11th at 1:30 pm ET, I’ll be holding space for some intentional self-care during a free virtual Queen B.E.E Talks session. We’ll spend time decompressing, reflecting, and engaging in practices like meditation and breathwork to center ourselves and restore balance. It’s an opportunity to come together, recharge, and reset. Register Here!

But if you’re unable to make it on Monday, don’t worry. We have another exciting opportunity for you to connect and grow. Join us on Saturday, November 16th for the Queen B.E.E Talks Symposium, a day filled with vibrant energy, community connections, and essential insights for your well-being as we move into the winter season. It’s going to be a powerful event, and I would love for you to be a part of it.

In both of these spaces, my hope is that you’ll leave feeling empowered, inspired, and ready to shine even brighter. Remember, you are part of a beautiful, powerful sisterhood, and the time to embrace your full potential is now.

I hope to see you in one of these spaces soon. Keep shining your light, Queen.
The world needs it.

With love and light,
Shoa, Co-Founder of ITAVcollab
