The History of Wellness in the Black Community: A Journey of Resilience and Empowerment

When most of us think about wellness, we often picture the latest fitness trends, the perfect smoothie, or the newest self-care ritual. But for the Black community, wellness has always been about more than just keeping fit; it's been about survival, resistance, and reclaiming health in a world that hasn’t always had their best interests at heart. Let’s dive into the history of wellness in the Black community, and how it has shaped the way they approach health today.

Healing from the Roots:  Herbal Remedies and Natural Medicine
Long before modern medicine and healthcare became widely accessible, Black people were already practicing self-care out of necessity. During the slavery era, access to doctors or medical professionals was rare for Black people, so they turned to nature for healing. They used herbal remedies, passed down through generations, to treat everything from common ailments to more serious conditions. These healing practices weren’t just about staying physically healthy they were an act of resistance, a way of surviving in a world that saw them as expendable.
Herbalism became a vital part of Black culture and wellness during this time, with plants and natural remedies becoming key to maintaining good health. These practices, deeply rooted in African traditions, are still being rediscovered and embraced today, forming the foundation of a modern wellness movement in Black communities.

Picture
Wellness as a Human Right:
The Civil Rights Movement and Healthcare Access

As the Civil Rights Movement fought for racial equality, wellness evolved into something even bigger than just individual health. It became a civil rights issue. The Black Panther Party, in particular, played a major role in shifting the conversation about health. The Party launched free health clinics in underserved communities, providing essential healthcare to those who were excluded from mainstream medical services.
These clinics weren’t just about treating sickness; they were about empowerment. The Black Panthers understood that health was directly tied to justice, and that access to healthcare was a fundamental human right. They recognized that wellness meant more than just physical health; it was about social and political power, too. Their community clinics provided vital healthcare while also challenging the system that left so many Black people without care.

Reclaiming Wellness: The Modern Movement
Fast forward to today, and Black wellness has taken on new forms while staying true to its roots. The focus is shifting toward holistic health, which combines physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. More and more Black people are turning to plant-based diets, focusing on mental health, and even embracing ancient practices like meditation, yoga, and spiritual healing.
But it’s not all about embracing the latest wellness trends. Many are also working to address the health disparities that still disproportionately affect Black communities like higher rates of chronic illnesses such as hypertension and diabetes, as well as the ongoing stigma surrounding mental health. For many, wellness is no longer just about looking good, it's about survival, self-care, and taking back control over their own health.

Wellness as Resistance: A Right, Not a Privilege
Wellness in the Black community has always been about more than just physical fitness or eating well it’s about fighting for health justice and challenging a system that hasn’t always been equitable. From herbal remedies passed down through generations to the activism of the Civil Rights Movement, wellness has been a tool for empowerment, resilience, and resistance.
Today, Black people are continuing to reclaim their health, not just as a personal pursuit but as a collective right. Wellness has become a form of activism fighting for equal access to healthcare, mental well-being, and a healthier future for the next generation.
So, the next time you think about wellness, remember that it’s more than just a buzzword. It’s about justice, equity, and the power to take control of one’s health in a world that has often denied that power.
Audre Lorde famously said, "Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare." - Audre Lorde

Embracing Winter Chill with Ayurveda

Peace and blessing village! Winter brings a natural shift in energy, the dominant doshic energy of Kapha and Vata (water, earth, air and ether universal elements). Therefore, it is a time to embrace creativity and grounding, while managing sluggishness and anxiety.
Ayurveda encourages us to align with the seasons, and winter is a time to balance Kapha’s heaviness and Vata’s restlessness.

Understanding the Kapha and Vata Dosha energies of Winter Kapha (water and earth element) is grounded and steady, but in excess, it can lead to lethargy or depression. Vata, made of air and ether, is creative but can cause anxiety when out of balance. Winter combines both energies, and we can observe their effects in our physical and mental well-being.

General Ayurvedic Tips for Winter
  • Eat warm, spiced meals. Focus on soups, stews, and cooked vegetables with warming spices like ginger and cinnamon.
  • Drink warm beverages. Choose chai, herbal teas, or warm water with lemon to soothe digestion and keep you grounded.
  • Exercise regularly. Keep your energy flowing with activities like yoga, walking, or dance.

Tips for Balancing Pitta in Winter
Though Pitta is less active in winter, those with a Pitta constitution can stay balanced by:
  • Eating grounding foods like sweet potatoes and legumes (lentils and beans).
  • Moderating spicy foods to avoid overheating.
  • Sticking to a steady routine and engaging in moderate exercise; yin yoga.
Tips for Balancing Vata in Winter
To calm Vata's restlessness:
  • Enjoy sweet and salty foods to soothe anxiety.
  • Drink warm beverages like chai to calm the nervous system.
  • Practice restorative yoga and avoid over-scheduling to maintain grounding.
Tips for Balancing Kapha in Winter
For those with Kapha tendencies, winter can feel heavy. Keep your energy light by:
  • Changing your routine to avoid stagnation.
  • Joining hot yoga classes or doing invigorating exercise.
  • Eating light, spiced foods instead of heavy, fatty options.
Winter is a time for reflection, but it can also bring challenges. By embracing Ayurvedic practices and balancing Kapha and Vata energies, you can navigate the season with greater ease and harmony. Remember to eat warming foods, stay active, and honor your body’s natural rhythms to find peace and vitality throughout the winter months.

As I started my day today, I felt a deep urge to remind you of something incredibly important: You are worthy. Worthy of rest. Worthy of care. Worthy of space to just be. In a world that often seems to be drowning in negativity, it’s so easy to forget that self-love, joy, healing, and abundance are not just things to aspire to—they are our birthright. And today, I want to remind you to own that truth.

We, as women of color, have often been told to shrink, to quiet ourselves, to play small. We’ve been handed limitations and expected to carry them as truths. But we are reclaiming our power. We have the ability to create the lives we deserve. We have the ability to create our own realities, free of the restrictions others try to impose on us.

This is why Aishia and I are so committed to the work we began five years ago. Our mission is clear: to create a community where Black women are both healers and the healed, supported by one another and thriving alongside our families. Every day, we take steps toward a future where we are free to fully embrace our strength, our joy, and our worth.
This is where you come in.
I want to invite you to join me for a special virtual experience designed to help you reconnect with yourself and nurture your well-being. On Monday, November 11th at 1:30 pm ET, I’ll be holding space for some intentional self-care during a free virtual Queen B.E.E Talks session. We’ll spend time decompressing, reflecting, and engaging in practices like meditation and breathwork to center ourselves and restore balance. It’s an opportunity to come together, recharge, and reset. Register Here!

But if you’re unable to make it on Monday, don’t worry. We have another exciting opportunity for you to connect and grow. Join us on Saturday, November 16th for the Queen B.E.E Talks Symposium, a day filled with vibrant energy, community connections, and essential insights for your well-being as we move into the winter season. It’s going to be a powerful event, and I would love for you to be a part of it.

In both of these spaces, my hope is that you’ll leave feeling empowered, inspired, and ready to shine even brighter. Remember, you are part of a beautiful, powerful sisterhood, and the time to embrace your full potential is now.

I hope to see you in one of these spaces soon. Keep shining your light, Queen.
The world needs it.

The Power of Mindfulness: Why It Matters for Black Women

Read Now

By: Tyler Shaw, ITAVcollab Public Health Intern
Picture
In a world that often feels chaotic and demanding, the practice of mindfulness has emerged as a beacon of calm and clarity. For Black women, mindfulness can be a transformative tool to navigate the unique challenges they face. In this blog post, we'll delve into the concept of mindfulness and explore why it's essential for Black women to incorporate it into their lives.
Mindfulness is the practice of being fully present in the moment, paying deliberate attention to thoughts, feelings, and sensations without judgment. It involves accepting these experiences without trying to change or suppress them. This practice can take various forms, including meditation, deep breathing, or simply being aware of your surroundings and inner state.

The Importance of Mindfulness for Black Women

  • Stress Reduction: Black women often encounter higher levels of stress due to the intersection of racial and gender discrimination. Mindfulness provides a valuable coping mechanism by helping to manage stress and reduce its harmful effects on physical and mental health.
  • Mental Health: Mindfulness has been shown to be effective in reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression. Given the disproportionate rates of mental health challenges among Black women, this practice can be a powerful tool for maintaining emotional well-being.
  • Self-Care: Mindfulness encourages self-care by reminding Black women to prioritize their own well-being. It offers a respite from the demands and expectations imposed by society, allowing them to recharge and care for themselves.
  • Resilience: Developing mindfulness skills can enhance resilience. Black women have a long history of resilience in the face of adversity, and mindfulness can be a contemporary tool to further strengthen this trait.
  • Empowerment: Mindfulness can foster a sense of empowerment by helping Black women connect with their inner strengths and wisdom. It allows for a deeper understanding of oneself and the capacity to make informed decisions.
  • Building Connections: Mindfulness promotes connection, not only with oneself but also with others. Black women can use mindfulness to build supportive networks and engage in meaningful relationships.

Picture
Incorporating Mindfulness into Daily Life
  • Start Small: Begin with short mindfulness exercises, such as a 5-minute meditation or focused breathing. Gradually increase the duration as you become more comfortable.
  • Mindful Moments: Incorporate mindfulness into everyday activities. Pay attention to the sensations of eating, walking, or even washing dishes. This can help you stay grounded in the present moment.
  • Find Support: Join a mindfulness group or seek out resources specifically designed for Black women. Sharing experiences and strategies can be empowering.
  • Practice Self-Compassion: Be gentle with yourself on your mindfulness journey. It's okay to have wandering thoughts; the key is to notice them without judgment and gently redirect your focus.

Mindfulness is not a panacea, but it is a powerful tool that can empower Black women to navigate life's challenges with greater resilience and well-being. By incorporating mindfulness practices into their daily lives, Black women can cultivate self-compassion, reduce stress, and build emotional resilience. In a world that often overlooks their unique experiences, mindfulness provides a path to self-discovery, self-care, and empowerment. Embracing mindfulness is not just an act of self-love; it's a powerful act of self-preservation and growth.

Picture
Juneteenth is a significant day in American history marking the emancipation of enslaved African Americans, we at ITAVcollab are inspired to reflect on the profound themes of freedom, resilience, and holistic well-being. This historic day, observed on June 19th, commemorates the moment in 1865 when Union soldiers brought news of freedom to enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas—two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed.

Picture
Honoring Our Heritage through Holistic Wellness
At ITAVcollab, we believe in the interconnectedness of mind, body, and spirit, and how essential this holistic approach is to overall well-being. Juneteenth serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of nurturing not just our physical health, but also our mental and emotional health. For the Black community, healing is particularly vital. Our rich history as healers, medicine men, and herbalists demonstrates the depth of our ancestral knowledge and the critical need for a holistic approach to wellness. Throughout history, our ancestors used natural remedies, spiritual practices, and communal support to heal and thrive despite adversity. This legacy of holistic healing continues to be crucial in addressing the unique challenges we face today.
Embracing this heritage means recognizing that true well-being comes from a balance of physical, mental, and emotional health. It calls us to integrate traditional practices with modern approaches to health, ensuring that we honor our roots while progressing towards a healthier future. Juneteenth invites us to celebrate our journey toward greater freedom and equality, and to reaffirm our commitment to holistic healing for ourselves and our community.

Picture
Reflection and Renewal
Juneteenth encourages us to reflect on the struggles and victories of those who fought for freedom and justice. It's a time to acknowledge the healing that comes from recognizing our shared history and embracing a future rooted in wellness and unity. For many, this day is a moment of renewal—a time to recommit to personal and collective healing practices that support our well-being. Engaging in wellness practices such as journaling, meditation, and walking can help us reflect and renew on this significant day.
  • Journaling allows us to process our thoughts and emotion
  • Meditation offers a space for inner peace and mindfulness
  •  Walking provides a physical outlet for releasing stress and connecting with nature
These practices not only honor our past but also foster a sense of renewal and strength as we move forward together.

Sydni envisions ITAVcollab continuing to grow and refine its methodologies to cater to the specific needs of diverse communities.
Message From Sydni to Villagers: “As I reflect, I believe it is extremely important first to know that as an individual you deserve to be here and take up space. It is OK to not be OK and if you are part of our village, you will be able to start a journey of healing Growing, and evolving.”
